The following reaction is used for the production of sodium hypochlorite:
NaOH + Cl2 -> NaClO + NaCl + H2O
Sodium hydroxide + chlorine -> sodium hypochlorite + sodium chloride + water

Applications:
1. Sodium hypochlorite, commonly known as bleach, is most frequently used as a disinfecting agent.
2. Instant action against bacteria: it acts as a killing agent for bacteria persisting in water.
3. Reduced to chloride ions causing oxidation: upon mixing with water, sodium hypochlorite dissociates and produces free chlorine ions. Thus, chlorination of water takes place.
4. In the textile industry sodium hypochlorite is used to bleach textile.
